ABOUT

Foteini Palpana (1984) is a visual artist and art educator living in Athens. She holds a BA of English Language and Literature from the University of Athens, as well as a BFA and MFA from the Athens School of Fine Arts with a scholarship by the Onassis Foundation. She is a recipient of the 1st ARTWORKS SNF Artist Fellowship Program 2018-2019 and has been a founding member of the artist group Campus Novel (2011-2020).

She has participated in artist-in-residence programs (Ios Art Resicency, Skaftfell Art Center IS, Institut für Alles Mögliche DE) and her work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and project spaces (Archaeological Museum of Paros, Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center, Zoumboulakis Gallery, Talc Studio, Eight Athens, SNFCC, ACG Gallery etc.)

"View of Us" curated by Dimitris Foutris at Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Space is her first solo show in an art gallery.

Her art practice is linked to an interest in categories of the natural environment, such as the ground and the landscape and her work develops in installations combining different mediums, such as sculpture, video, photographic archives, prints and drawing.

In her works she has often adopted the characteristics of the map, the model, the index or the archive, gradually opting for sculptural environments of geological or even bodily formations. In her performances for the camera she portrays minimal actions putting herself in contact with the natural element while also focusing on the interaction between the artist’s body and the sculptural object.

In her latest "soft sculptures" and "soft drawings" she explores the properties of textiles and their several possibilities as sculpture material.

She is interested in exploring and recreating a sensory experience of our natural surroundings and believes in a universal, fundamental right to wander uninhibited and access nature in an unlimited way.
